On Friday, Telangana's Chief Minister E. Rajender Reddy encouraged teachers at government schools to share lunch with their students to ensure the quality of meals served.
Speaking at an event commemorating Teacher's Day, Reddy expressed his concern over incidents of food poisoning in government schools, despite the government's increased funding for meals and other essential services.
In addition to his role as Chief Minister, Reddy oversees the education department and announced plans to visit schools to have meals with students. He stated, 'When teachers dine with students, it will help maintain proper standards in meal preparation.'
Enhancing Educational Standards
The Chief Minister urged educators to inform the government about the need for improvements in meal quality and other facilities. He revealed that his administration plans to send around 200 teachers annually to countries like Singapore and South Korea to study best practices in education.
Reddy noted, 'Countries like Singapore and Japan have progressed due to quality education.' He highlighted that approximately 2.4 million students are enrolled in around 27,000 government schools, while 3.4 million students attend 11,000 private institutions.
He remarked that the qualifications of teachers in government schools are generally superior to those in private schools.
New Education Policy and Political Aspirations
To formulate a new education policy for the state, Reddy has established a committee comprising former Rajya Sabha member K. Keshav Rao, MLA Kadiyam Srihari, and other officials.
Referencing the success of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Reddy stated, 'He was elected for a second and third term primarily due to the changes made in education, which successfully reached the underprivileged through teachers.'
Acknowledging his political ambitions, the Chief Minister said, 'I have my own interests. If you perform well, it could create opportunities for my second and third terms. I have nothing to hide. I will work hard, and I will work hard alongside you.'
